Self-Help for Common ENT Problems
With the abundance of information, tools and remedies accessible through the internet, many people attempt to understand and tackle their health problems prior to seeing a physician. Here are some practical tips for common ENT problems where self-help is a logical first step:
Ear wax removal: Don’t try to dig it out with a Q-Tip or a tiny spoon! Instead, pour some hydrogen peroxide drops into the ear canal and let them sit for 5 - 10 minutes, then flush the canal with warm water using the “Elephant Ear Wax Removal” system (sold on Amazon.) If you have ear pain, tubes in your ears, or a hole in your eardrum, see an ENT and don’t attempt this at home.
Nosebleeds: Most nosebleeds arise from the front of the septum (the thing that divides your nose in half) and can result from trauma, infection, excess dryness, or improper use of nasal sprays. If you get a nosebleed, first, pinch the front of the nose and slightly tuck your chin (leaning back will just cause the blood to run into your throat.) Apply an ice pack to the nose to constrict the blood vessels. Afrin nasal spray will stop most nosebleeds as it is a strong vasoconstrictor. Spray Afrin into each nostril and pinch the nose without stopping for 5 minutes. Once the bleeding has stopped, apply bacitracin ointment to the front of the nose every day for 5 days so the area of bleeding heals. See an ENT if the bleeding persists for longer than 15 minutes or you experience recurrent nosebleeds.
Ear Pain when Flying: Ear pain can occur during descent due to air trapped in the middle ear. If you have had a recent cold or ear infection or are prone to ear problems, try this before flying: Pinch your nose, close your mouth and blow until you feel your ears pop. If you are unable to pop your ears, your Eustachian tubes are clogged, and you will likely have pain during your flight. Afrin nasal spray is often effective for temporarily clearing your ears. Try it before the flight and see if you can pop your ears - if so, then spray Afrin into your nose an hour before flying. If you can’t clear your ears despite using Afrin, see an ENT before your trip.
